Your 'Good to know' guide for a successful start to your studies
The first steps at university are exciting, but can also be challenging. To help you get off to a confident start right from the beginning, we have created the 'Good to know' guide exclusively for our first-year students.
Academic quarter hour
You will often find the abbreviation c.t., the so-called academic quarter hour, in course details. It indicates that the course scheduled for "10 c.t." does not actually start until 10:15 am. The abbreviation s.t., on the other hand, stands for "sine tempore", meaning that the course scheduled for "10 s.t." actually starts at 10:00 am.
Library use
Information for first-time users can be found on the University of Bayreuth’s Library website. Much of the content is also available to university members (including students) electronically from off campus, such as the extensive range of e-books, electronic journals and databases. We recommend taking a tour of the library at the beginning of the semester to learn about everything it has to offer. Besides the tours of the libraries, courses and workshops on different topics, for example the best way to search for literature or working with systems that manage references. All information and dates for these courses can be found on the website.
bt username
Rest assured: you will soon know your bt username by heart! Until then, you will find it on the back of your Uni Bayreuth Campus Card (bt...). You can use your bt username to authenticate yourself for all of the university's online services, such as e-mail, VPN, intranet, e-learning, MyFiles, etc.
Campus Card
All students at the University of Bayreuth receive a Campus Card. You can use many different services with it: Among other things, it serves as a ticket for local public transport, as a library card and for cashless payment in the canteen. You will receive the Campus Card by post once you have successfully enrolled. Before each new semester, the card must be validated again, for example in the Central University Administration building or the Central Library.
Campus map
Sometimes the abbreviations that are commonplace for older students and university employees cause confusion for first-year students. When we talk about RW, AI, Geo, or GW, we mean the buildings on campus. To help you find your way around, we recommend that you take a look at the campus map. By the way: the map is also printed in small print on the back of the Campus Cards!
cmlife / Course catalogue
cmlife is your central point of contact for managing your studies. With your bt username and password, you can log in and register for courses and exams, create your timetable, or print out certificates. You can find an overview of the self-service functions for students on the Student Administration Office website. You can also log in here with your username and password.
Campus app UBT
The UBT app makes it easier for you to organize your everyday university life. Whether it's emails, appointments, meal plans or your current grades, you'll find everything clearly arranged and up-to-date in your app. The app has been certified by TÜV and meets the recognized requirements for software quality in terms of functionality, data protection, and data security. The campus app is available as a free Apple or Android version.
E-mail address
The university will send official notifications to the university e-mail address set up for you: Benutzerkennung@uni-bayreuth.de or Firstname.Lastname@uni-bayreuth.de (this may vary if the name appears twice at the university). Please make sure that e-mails reach you reliably and that you check your mailbox regularly.
e-Learning
The e-learning platform enables the digital exchange of information and material, as well as submissions.
International Office
The International Office is typically the first point of contact for all international students, to get more information and support.
- Contact for questions regarding the application and admission: Incoming Team
- Contact for general questions during the stay at the University of Bayreuth: Welcome Services
Throughout enrolment and the orientation week, and with many events and workshops during the semester, not to mention the alumni network - the International Office assists international students before, during, and after their time at the University. Students are always welcome to get in touch with Welcome Services. They help with all questions and problems and always have an open ear for international students and researchers, in order to ensure a pleasant stay in Bayreuth, Kulmbach, and on campus.
Integreat app
We would also like to recommend the Integreat app to you: The Integreat app is a digital "everyday guide" that provides an overview of our region, our culture and our day-to-day lives. It also provides information about the asylum procedure, learning the language, and important contacts for all areas of life. The app is available free of charge in German, English, Arabic, Persian, Romanian, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian.
Mobility Tutors
The Mobility Tutors support international students with all academic questions during their time at the University of Bayreuth. As each faculty has their own Mobility Tutor, it is important to specify your degree programme in the initial e-mail to get the correct contact person right away.
Language Centre
Would you like to learn a new language? The Language Centre at the University of Bayreuth makes it easy for you to take language courses alongside your studies. The range of courses is impressive: from ancient languages such as Ancient Greek and Latin to languages such as English, Spanish, French, and even rarely offered languages such as Bambara, Hausa, and Swahili.
